What Is Post-Award Grant Management?

Post-award grant management refers to the administrative, financial, and reporting activities that take place after a grant award has been made. These responsibilities vary by funder and award but often include monitoring compliance requirements, tracking allowable costs, meeting reporting deadlines, and documenting program progress and outcomes.

Strong post-award management helps organizations remain in good standing with funders, reduces compliance risk, and supports long-term funding sustainability.

Compliance & Allowable Cost Disclosure

Post-award grant management services are provided only after a grant award has been made and are contracted directly with the client organization.

In some cases, and only when expressly permitted by the funder, post-award management or compliance support services may be disclosed in advance and included in a proposed grant budget as an allowable cost, subject to funder approval.

The client organization remains fully responsible for payment of all services, regardless of funding source or award outcome.

For federal awards, all costs charged to the award must meet the allowability criteria in 2 CFR Part 200 (reasonable, allocable, documented, and approved). We assist with documentation and preparation but do not determine allowability.

Why Post-Award Grant Management Matters

Effective post-award management helps organizations:

  • Maintain compliance with funder requirements

  • Reduce risk of audit findings or disallowed costs

  • Strengthen funder relationships

  • Improve documentation for future funding opportunities

Responsible grant management is an essential part of long-term funding sustainability and organizational credibility.

Frequently Asked Questions

How is post-award grant management different from grant writing?
Grant writing occurs before funding is awarded and focuses on proposal development. Post-award grant management begins only after funding is received and focuses on compliance, reporting, and implementation support.

Can post-award management services be included in a grant budget?
In some cases and only when permitted by the funder, post-award management or compliance support services may be included as allowable costs, subject to funder approval. Allowability varies by funder and award. Inclusion in a budget does not guarantee that any particular cost will be reimbursed or approved by a funder; allowability is determined by the funder and award terms.

Do you submit reports on behalf of the organization?
Support may include drafting and preparation assistance. Final submission responsibility remains with the client organization unless otherwise specified by the funder.
