The Grants You Keep Missing (And Why No One Told You About Them)
I have this conversation all the time.
Someone will say,
“We’ve been looking for grants but there just aren’t many out there for what we do.”
And I get it. It feels that way.
But the reality is a little different.
There are thousands of grants available at any given time. The issue usually is not that they don’t exist. It’s that the right ones are not being found… or recognized.
You’re Probably Looking in the Same Places as Everyone Else
Most nonprofits are searching for grants the same way.
They Google things like
“grants for nonprofits”
“grants for youth programs”
“grants for mental health”
And what comes up?
The same big, highly competitive opportunities that everyone else is applying for.
So now you are competing against hundreds, sometimes thousands, of organizations for one pool of funding.
It’s exhausting. And honestly, it’s not the best use of your time.
The Best Grants Are Not Always the Most Obvious Ones
Some of the strongest opportunities I see are not the ones going viral or being shared everywhere.
They are:
Local and regional foundations
Corporate giving programs tied to specific industries
Smaller private funders with very targeted priorities
Opportunities that require a little more digging or strategy to uncover
These grants often have less competition and a much higher chance of being funded if you are aligned.
This Is Where Strategy Comes In
Finding grants is not about searching harder. It is about searching smarter.
Instead of asking,
“What grants are out there?”
Start asking,
“What funders are already interested in the type of work we do?”
That shift changes everything.
Now you are not chasing funding. You are identifying where you already fit.
A Quick Example
Let’s say you run a youth workforce program.
Instead of only searching for “youth grants,” you might look at:
Funders focused on economic mobility
Workforce development initiatives
Community development funding
Corporate foundations tied to industries your youth could enter
Now your pool of opportunities expands significantly, and they are much more aligned with your actual work.
Why This Matters More Than Ever Right Now
We are in one of the busiest times of the year for grant funding.
New opportunities are opening. Deadlines are approaching. Funders are actively reviewing applications.
The organizations that are successful right now are not scrambling.
They already have a clear strategy and a pipeline of opportunities that actually make sense for them.
If You Feel Like You’re Missing Something, You Probably Are
And that’s okay.
Most organizations have never been shown how to approach grant research strategically.
It’s not something you just “figure out” overnight.
But once you understand how to identify the right opportunities, everything becomes more efficient.
You spend less time chasing dead ends and more time pursuing funding that you actually have a shot at.

Final Thought
You don’t need more random grant lists.
You need a strategy that helps you find the opportunities that are already looking for organizations like yours.
Because those are the ones where your programs don’t just sound good.
They make sense.
And that is what gets funded.
