Project AWARE—Supporting Mental Health in Schools

Author: Dr. Rielly Keyser, DrPH

Project AWARE (Advancing Wellness and Resiliency in Education) is a SAMHSA-funded program that supports mental health services in K–12 schools.

Grants range from $1 million to $3 million and aim to:

  • Increase awareness of mental health issues among school-aged youth

  • Train school staff to identify and respond to mental health needs

  • Connect students and families to needed services

  • Build sustainable infrastructure for school-based mental health

State education agencies and school districts with strong mental health partners are eligible to apply. Successful applications often involve multiple school sites and a deep understanding of community needs.
